When managing a company Facebook page, sooner or later you will need to publish important information, but you will not be online at the moment. In that case, you'll probably reach for one of the post scheduling apps. But is it a suitable solution? Read on to find out why it isn't. The key to understanding the problem is the concept of EdgeRank EdgeRank is the algorithm Facebook uses to determine which posts appear in a user's news feed. My colleague Tonda Růžička described it in detail in an article on the MediaGuru.cz server , for our purposes a simplified explanation will suffice.
Whether C Level Executive List a post from your Facebook page appears in a fan's news feed depends on three things: 1. How often the fan interacts with the fan page (comments on statuses, "likes" photos, etc.). 2. What is the weight of the post you make on Facebook (the weight is determined by the type of post, e.g. photos have more weight than just text statuses). 3. How long ago you published the post (the shorter the better). The product of these points gives each Facebook post a certain EdgeRank. The higher the EdgeRank, the more likely the post will appear in the News Feed. The relationship between EdgeRank and post scheduling apps To explain why posts published through third-party applications have a lower EdgeRank, the first of the three points described above is important to us. When calculating the EdgeRank of a new post, Facebook takes into account the fan's previous interactions with the Facebook page .
Once you share a post through a scheduling app (like HootSuite or Postcron ), Facebook doesn't take it as posted by you , but by the app. Do you know where I'm going with this? image Post submitted via HootSuite The fan's interaction with the app has no history, so the post's EdgeRank will be low and the status or photo is unlikely to make it to the news feed. In their research , Applum even found that engagement rates drop by 80% for posts published through scheduling apps , which is no small feat.
